Certainly Paul’s circumstances were anything but joyful! He had been arrested illegally, taken to Rome, and was now awaiting trial. How was he able to have such joy in the midst of uncomfortable circumstances? Because happiness is based on our happenings while joy is based in Jesus! He had the “single mind”—his concern was not for Paul, but for Christ and the Gospel.

The problem of sin has brought the consequences of the curse – one of which is that the ‘new’ never lasts (or costs too much to keep new). New houses lose their magic after a mortgage payment or two. The new car smell generally wears off after about two weeks. Honeymoons don’t last forever. Even in the spiritual realm, the newness of conversion and church wears off all-too-soon! Do you ever catch yourself praying and wonder if what you are asking is even close to what God wants? I’ve wondered that a lot. I’ll be praying for someone to be healed of arthritis and think, ‘Maybe God doesn’t want to heal them yet.
